Can I claim my receipt for counselling services as a deduction on my taxes?
You may be able to use any medical receipts that have not been reimbursed by health plans to receive deductions on your taxes. Typically, the medical expenses must add up to 3% of their income in order to have an effect.
Can I get reimbursed for the amount I pay in counselling fees?
There are several insurance companies in Canada. Some insurance companies do cover counselling services but coverage is not consistent.
Coverage may be possible under the following insurance companies: Pacific Blue Cross, Manulife, Equitable Life, and Greenshield.
Coverage is not automatic and it is up to each individual to contact their insurance company to determine what services are covered.
You will need to check if your plan covers therapy provided by a Canadian Certified Counsellor (C.C.C.), registered through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).
What if my plan does not cover services provided by Counsellors?
If your plan does not cover Canadian Certified Counsellors (C.C.C), you can make a request to your employer to adjust your plan. This is an easy adjustment to make with no cost to your employer.
