As a highly sensitive therapist, I relate well with those who also identify as being highly sensitive (a unique trait identified in approximately 15% of our population).
While the term 'sensitive" often has a negative connotation/stigma,
let me clarity with my description:
Empathetic, intuitive, creative, visionary, deep listener, deep thinker, deeply spiritual, deep feeler, excellent with language, deep belief in justice, detail oriented, acute awareness of subtleties. Highly emotional, NOT highly irrational.
Do you… Need more time to thoughtfully reflect, deeply process, or make meaning of your experiences?
Notice slight changes in other people and the environment that others don’t notice?
Feel in tune with others’ emotional cues?
Feel a great deal of empathy?
Feel frequently misunderstood? Feel the need to over-prepare or not good enough?
Feel over-stimulated in moderately stimulating environments? (including clicking, tapping, snoring, bright lights, certain textures, certain smells and tastes?)
NEED quiet time to recharge?
If you answered yes to most of these questions, you may be a highly sensitive person.
The the good news is that the HSP trait is NOT a DEFECT or WEAKNESS. YOU ARE NOT BROKEN! You are a gift.
This trait comes with many benefits, the world needs people like you who are deeply sensing and who can see things from a perspective that many others cannot. There are others like you!
Processing experiences more intensely can also lead to experiencing anxiety and/or depression (in unhealthy situations) in greater ways not experienced by those without the sensitivity trait. This can lead to feelings of being misunderstood, judged, or disconnected from others who don't identify as highly sensitive.
Leaning how to nurture and support this trait has helped me tremendously in my personal and professional life. I am happy to help those who have this trait learn more about it and how they to live purposeful, healthy lives.
