Internal Family Systems Therapy refers to the different aspects of your personality and how you perceive and respond to different experiences. While these patterns may be similar to those experienced in the family you grew up in, this approach does not require physically having your family join you.
When unresolved trauma is triggered, your brain tells your body to shift into survival mode (fight, flight, panic, freeze, numb, blank out...). These defenses likely saved your life or helped you cope at one time. However, these automatic reactions may now be causing substantial stress for you and those you care about.
By identifying the traumatic events and the competing or conflicting thoughts, emotions, and defenses, we can focus on healing those parts so you are able to respond in healthier ways with less disturbance.
